Cholesterol oxidase interference on the emergence and viability of cotton boll weevil larvae PAB
Santos,Roseane Cavalcanti; Monnerat,Rose Gomes; Sá,Maria de Fátima Grossi de; Cordeiro,Célia Maria Torres; Gomes,Ana Cristina; Gander,Eugen Silvano.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of the enzyme cholesterol oxidase (Coase) on emergence and viability of larvae of the cotton boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis Boheman, 1843). A series of bioassays was performed with eggs and neonate larvae exposed to different enzyme concentrations in artificial diet. Larval survival was affected at all enzyme concentrations tested, and the six-day LD50 was 53 mug/mL (CI 95%: 43-59). Coase also interfered with hatching of larvae after eggs were floated for 15 min in Coase solution at different concentrations. Observations at the light and electronic microscopic level of midguts from larvae fed on artificial diet containing 53 mug/mL of Coase and collected at six days revealed highly vacuolated regions in...

Epithelial gill cells in the armored catfish, Hypostomus cf. plecostomus (Loricariidae) BJB
FERNANDES,M. N.; PERNA-MARTINS,S. A..
Epithelial gill cell morphology and distribution were investigated in the armored catfish, Hypostomus cf. plecostomus, which lives in soft ion-poor Brazilian freshwaters. Pavement cells are the most abundant type of cell on both filament and lamellar epithelia and there are a great number of mucous and chloride cells between them. Mucous cells are almost covered by adjacent pavement cells and have large packed granules showing electrondense differences. No mucous cells were found on the lamellar epithelium. Chloride cell were distributed throughout both epithelia and usually have large apical surface facing the external medium and may exhibit short and sparsely distributed microvilli. The presence of chloride cells on the lamellar epithelium may be an...

Identification of glycoproteins in mucous cells of the gill epithelium of Colossoma macropomum after exposure to organophosphate Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Moron,S.E.; Matos,P.R.; Ramos,A.T.; Gomes,M.G.T..
ABSTRACT The use of organophosphates has been recommended for fish, especially the trichlorfon to control parasites. Colossoma macropomum were exposed to trichlorfon during 96 hours and of total number of mucous cells decreased in the number of cells when compared to the control group. Glycoproteins acid, acid sulphated and neutral was identified in the gill epithelium. Neutra glycoprotein had a significant decrease between control and the sublethal concentration. Acid glycoprotein didn’t have any significant difference between the groups exposed to the trichlorfon, compared to the control group. Sulfated acidic glycoprotein in the group exposed to the trichlorfon was noticed a reduction in number of mucosal cells acidic sulphated. The differences between...

Maintenance of the corneal epithelium is carried out by germinative cells of its basal stratum and not by presumed stem cells of the limbus BJMBR
Haddad,A.; Faria-e-Sousa,S.J..
The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the proliferative behavior of rabbit corneal epithelium and establish if any particular region was preferentially involved in epithelial maintenance. [3H]-thymidine was injected intravitreally into both normal eyes and eyes with partially scraped corneal epithelium. Semithin sections of the anterior segment were evaluated by quantitative autoradiography. Segments with active replication (on) and those with no cell division (off) were intermingled in all regions of the tissue, suggesting that the renewal of the epithelial surface of the cornea followed an on/off alternating pattern. In the limbus, heavy labeling of the outermost layers was observed, coupled with a few or no labeled nuclei in the basal...

MORPHOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE TONGUE OF BUDGERIGAR (Melopsittacus undulatus) International Journal of Morphology
Martinez,M.; Stefanini,M. A.; Martinez,F. E.; Guida,H. L.; Pinheiro,P. F. F.; Almeida,C. C. D.; Segatelli,T. M..
The tongue of the budgerigar was analyzed macroscopically and by scanning electron microscopy with conventional and NaoH maceration techniques. Macroscopic analysis showed a median sulcus along the medium to the posterior regions. Transverse sulcus were also observed. The dorsum of the tongue showed a relatively smooth surface lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Lingual papillae were not detect on the anterior and medium regions, only at the root of the tongue. These structures were curved and inclined posteriorly. Near to the larynges aditus numerous projections like lingual papillae were noted. The anterior and medium regions showed connective tissue protrusions with longitudinal and transversal arrangement. The surface of the...

PRODUCTION OF OVOGONIA BY GERMINATIVE EPITHELIUM OF THE OVARY AT SOME MAMMALIA AND BIRDS Ciência Rural
Sincai,Mariana; Marcu,Adrian.
The studies were effected on ovaries from sows, cows, bitches, dous and hens. Our investigations revealed the generation of cellular rows of germinative epithelium into the cortex not only during the embrionary period but also in the adult ovary. The histological investigations revealed an intense proliferative process of the germinative epithelium of adult ovary which generated groups of ovogonia under the lamina basalis. From ovogonia developed oocytes and then ovarian follicles. The cause for the proliferation of ovary germinative epithelium could be: the multiple folliculary dehiscences, the premature degeneration of ovarian follicles and formation of the corpus luteum, phenomena that reduce continually the number of embrionary ovogonia.

Response of mucous cells of the gills of traíra (Hoplias malabaricus) and jeju (Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus) (Teleostei: Erythrinidae) to hypo- and hyper-osmotic ion stress Neotropical Ichthyology
Moron,Sandro Estevan; Andrade,Cássio Arilson de; Fernandes,Marisa Narciso.
The mucous cells (MC) of traíra, Hoplias malabaricus, and jeju, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus, two ecologically distinct erythrinid species, were analyzed in fish exposed to deionized (DW) and high ion concentration (NaCl and Ca2+) water (HIW) during 15 days to evaluate the MC responses to ion challenge. MCs are localized in the leading and trailing edge and, interlamellar region of the gill filament epithelium but, in H. unitaeniatus, they are also found in the breathing or lamellar epithelium. MC density is lower in H. malabaricus, the exclusively water-breathing fish, than in H. unitaeniatus, a facultative air-breathing fish. The transference to DW or HIW did not change the MC density and surface area, excepting in H. malabaricus, in the first day of...

Tracheal cryopreservation: caspase-3 immunoreactivity in tracheal epithelium and in mixed glands BJMBR
Sotres-Vega,A.; Baltazares-Lipp,M.; Villalba-Caloca,J.; Gaxiola-Gaxiola,M.O.; Santibañez-Salgado,J.A.; Olmos-Zúñiga,J.R.; Jasso-Victoria,R..
Cryopreservation has an immunomodulating effect on tracheal tissue as a result of class II antigen depletion due to epithelium exfoliation. However, not all epithelium is detached. We evaluated the role of apoptosis in the remaining epithelium of 30 cryopreserved tracheal grafts. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity of tracheal epithelium was studied in canine tracheal segments cryopreserved with F12K medium, with or without subsequent storage in liquid nitrogen at -196°C for 15 days. Loss of structural integrity of tracheal mixed glands was observed in all cryopreserved tracheal segments. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity in tracheal mucosa and in mixed glands was significantly decreased, in contrast to the control group and to cryopreserved tracheal segments in which it...
